Warli art wall hanging made out of waste.
Introduction: Warli art is one of the oldest tribal arts of India. It is named after the tribe Warli. They hailed from the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Warli has a basic graphic representation: a circle ,triangle and a square. It is an earthy art form.A circle represents nature like sun and moon. The triangle represents trees and mountains and the square represents an enclosed space or a piece of land. These pictorial representations were painted only during special occasions like weddings and during the harvest season.
I first saw this art in a Chitrakala Parishath Exhibition in Bangalore,India.I have always had a keen interest in knowing the history of different art forms from different parts of India and this interest of mine, made me dig more into warli art. Now warli art has been incorporated in textile Industries,in home decor,Jewellery and much more.
Since I stay in USA and have very fewer options of getting a wall hanging with warli painting in it and even if I did, they happened to be pretty expensive, I decided to make one :). There is a photographic representation as to how i did the wall hanging.

Photos of the craft
Step 1
Cut the Cardboard in a square measuring 15 cm (centimeter) .I have made 6 squares totally.
Step 2
Now cut the Cardstock paper in square measuring 15 cm (centimeter) similar to the cardboard which has already been cut. Cut 4 yellow and 2 Red.
Step 3
Draw your Warli art on the card stock paper with a Black pen. Instead of drawing it in the usual square, turn the square into a diamond shape and start your drawing. Drawing sun and moon, people dancing, bride and bridegroom, musicians playing instruments, are the common ones. Make sure you also draw a border, it just makes it more defined.
Step 4
Stick the card stocks to the cardboard using glue. Make sure the glue doesn’t get onto the drawing.
Step 5
Arrange your diamond-shaped cardboard with warli drawings on them with the alternate colors, 3 on each wall hanging (Yellow-Red-Yellow).
Step 6
Now sew them with a thread. Sew 1 and 2.Then 2 and 3.
Step 7
Enjoy your new wall hanging craft and be prepared to get amazing compliments 🙂
If you have any questions you can always comment and will be more than happy to answer your questions.
