Read more about the significance of lotus in buddhism here.

The lotus flower symbolizes purity and renunciation. Although the lotus has its roots in the mud at the bottom of a pond, its flower lies above the water.
Because of this unique nature of purity, the Lotus Flower helps in purification of the spirit which is born into murkiness, which is a reflection of the real world.

The lotus flower also symbolizes fortune. It grows in muddy water, and thanks to the forth given by the muddy environment, the lotus flower is capable of growing itself, rising and blooming above the murk to achieve the ultimate enlightenment.
